ARRUPE
This week I started my arrupe assignment for a class I am currently taking. I am assigned to go to Julian Street Inn in San Jose for a program called Innvision. This is a shelter for people who are homeless, just got out of jail, or a place to go to be rehabbed. However, what makes this shelter unique is that it only houses homeless people with mental problems. My visit was extremely interesting. I talked to three gentlemen who had amazing stories about how they had gotten in their current position. I learned a lot from these men and their rough lives.

I like how this blog is very local and gives us local information.
ReplyDeleteWas the visit very difficult psychologically/ emotionally?
ReplyDeleteArrupe was a great experience for me. I was required to do it for a class last year and although I thought it might be annoying at first, I ended up really loving it. There was so much I learned there that I would have never learned in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI like how you are getting a lot out of your arrupe experience. There are people that just want someone to listen and care.
ReplyDeleteIt was difficult at first because I was shocked at how open these people were about situations that I've never been exposed to before. I got more comfortable the longer I was with them. Eventually I got used to how they talked and I could talk with them easily. It really is a fun experience.
ReplyDeleteI did an Arrupe last year for a class at a Nursing Home in San Jose. It was mainly lower class individuals who were unable, due to physical or psychological reasons, to take care of themselves at home. Overall it was a great experience for me but everytime I went I witnessed either fights the elderly resident had with the nurses, or a decline in health in many of the residents. This was the most depressing part, there was nothing really medically that could be done to heal these people, and you just had to let life take its course while you tried to help them enjoy the time they had left.
